For management purposes, you can configure the Cisco Catalyst switches that run Cisco IOS® software to return a custom string. Note: The serial number of Cisco Catalyst switches cannot be modified. This requirement is especially the case when you need a replacement part, or return materials authorization (RMA). When you create a service request with Cisco Technical Support, you must have the serial number of the affected devices at hand.
